Privacy Policy

Inkwelo is a writing app that runs entirely on your Mac. It has no account, no server and no analytics. There is no copy of your writing anywhere but your own computer — which means there is nothing about you for us to collect, store, lose or hand over.
The whole policy in one paragraph. Inkwelo does not collect any data about you or your writing. It makes no network requests, has no user accounts, contains no telemetry, analytics, advertising or crash reporting, and sends nothing to us or to anyone else. Your documents are plain Markdown files in a folder you chose on your own disk. If you later put that folder into iCloud Drive, Dropbox or any other service, that is your own arrangement with that provider — see Cloud folders you set up yourself.
1. Who this policy is from
Inkwelo is an independently made Mac app. In this policy, "we", "our" and "us" mean the publisher of Inkwelo. For the purposes of the EU General Data Protection Regulation we are the data controller for the very limited processing described in section 6 and section 7, and you can reach us — including for any data-protection request — at hello@inkwelo.com.
This policy covers the Inkwelo Mac app and the website at inkwelo.com. It does not cover Apple's own handling of your data when you download or buy from the Mac App Store — see section 5.
2. What the app collects
Nothing. Inkwelo collects no personal data, no usage data and no diagnostic data.
Specifically, the app does not:
- require or offer an account, login, email address or licence key tied to your identity
- contain analytics, telemetry, event tracking or usage measurement of any kind
- contain advertising, advertising identifiers or any cross-app or cross-site tracking
- contain crash reporting or automatic error reporting
- send your documents, your file names, your folder paths or any part of your writing anywhere
- use cookies or any similar storage technology
- run a server, sync service or cloud backend of any kind — we operate none
Because none of this exists, there is no data for us to sell, share, disclose, retain or be compelled to produce. There is no account for you to delete, and no export for us to provide, because we never held anything in the first place.
3. Where your writing lives
Your documents are ordinary .md files inside a folder you pick on your own Mac. Inkwelo reads and writes those files, together with its own preferences (such as your theme, typeface and window settings), which macOS stores locally on your machine in the normal way.
You do not need Inkwelo to get at your work. The files are plain text, readable by any editor, and they remain yours whether or not you keep using the app. Nothing is stored in a proprietary database, and nothing is locked behind our software.
4. Cloud folders you set up yourself
Inkwelo has no sync feature. We do not operate a sync service, and the app never uploads your writing anywhere.
Because your writing is simply a folder of plain files, you can of course place that folder inside iCloud Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive, Google Drive, a git repository, a network share or any other service, and it will be synced or backed up by that service. Many people do, and it works well.
If you choose to do that, you are handing your files to a third party on your own initiative, under your own account and under that provider's terms and privacy policy. From that point on, the privacy, security, retention, encryption and availability of those files are governed by that provider and not by us.
We have no visibility into it, no control over it, no ability to retrieve or delete anything from it, and we accept no responsibility or liability for how that provider handles your files. If that matters to you, read the privacy policy of the service you are syncing to before you move your folder into it.
5. Spelling and grammar checking
Inkwelo's spelling and grammar checking runs entirely on your Mac. The text you write is analysed locally by software on your machine — it is not sent to a server, a language model or any third-party API. Grammar checking uses Harper, an open-source checker distributed under the Apache 2.0 licence, which runs in the app itself.
The Style Check feature, which marks filler, hedges and clichés, works the same way: locally, on your own machine, with nothing transmitted.
6. Buying and downloading from the Mac App Store
Inkwelo is distributed through the Mac App Store. Apple is the seller, and your download, purchase and payment are handled by Apple under Apple's Privacy Policy — not by us.
Apple provides developers with aggregated, anonymised sales and usage reports through App Store Connect: totals such as how many units were downloaded in a country, on which macOS versions, and how many people arrived from a given source. We can see those aggregate figures. They do not identify you, and we receive no names, email addresses, payment details or device identifiers from Apple. We cannot connect any of it to an individual person.
7. If you email us
If you write to hello@inkwelo.com, we receive your email address, whatever you put in your message, and anything you attach. We use it only to answer you. We do not add you to a mailing list, we do not use your address for marketing, and we do not pass it to anyone else.
Email reaches us through our email provider, which stores messages on its servers in the ordinary course of delivering mail. We keep correspondence only as long as it is useful for support and our own records, and you can ask us at any time to delete an exchange.
Please do not send us confidential material or the full text of unpublished work unless it is genuinely needed to solve a problem — email is not a secure channel, and we would rather not hold your manuscript.
8. This website
inkwelo.com sets no cookies and runs no analytics, no tag manager, no advertising pixels and no third-party trackers. The typefaces on this page are served from our own site rather than a font CDN, so loading it does not disclose your visit to a third party.
The site is served by a hosting provider, which — like all web hosts — processes the technical information needed to deliver a page to you, such as your IP address and browser user-agent, and may retain it briefly in standard server logs for security and reliability. We do not use those logs to build profiles, and we do not combine them with anything else.
9. Your rights
Data-protection law gives you rights over personal data held about you: to know what is held, to get a copy, to have it corrected or erased, to restrict or object to its processing, and to have it ported elsewhere.
In Inkwelo's case these rights have almost nothing to attach to, because we hold no personal data about our users. They apply in practice only to email correspondence, if you have written to us. To exercise them, email hello@inkwelo.com and we will respond within 30 days.
If you are in the European Economic Area or the United Kingdom, you also have the right to complain to your national data protection authority. If you are in California, we confirm that we do not sell or share personal information as those terms are defined by the CCPA, and we never have. If you are in India, the same access, correction, erasure and grievance rights apply under the DPDP Act; address grievances to the same email.
10. Children
Inkwelo is a general-purpose writing tool and is not directed at children under 13. Since the app collects no data from anyone, it collects none from children either.

12. Changes to this policy
If Inkwelo ever changes in a way that affects this policy, we will update this page and change the "Last updated" date above. If a change were ever material — for example, if a future version introduced an optional feature that touched the network — we would say so plainly here and in the app's release notes, and any such feature would be opt-in.
